Origin and Description
The 'Large American Flag' leek, also known as 'Giant Musselburgh,' is a popular heirloom variety known for its robust flavor and impressive size. This variety originates from Scotland, where it was bred for its hardiness and ability to withstand harsh weather conditions. The name 'Large American Flag' refers to its white, sturdy, and tall stalks, which resemble the stripes of the American flag.
Growth and Cultivation
Leeks are biennial plants, which means they complete their life cycle over two growing seasons. However, they are typically grown as annuals for their edible stems. The 'Large American Flag' leek is particularly favored for its ease of cultivation and adaptability to various growing conditions. It thrives in full sun and well-drained soil with a pH level between 6.0 and 7.0.
Planting Instructions
Seed Starting: Start seeds indoors 10-12 weeks before the last frost date. Sow the seeds 1/4 inch deep in seed trays filled with a quality seed-starting mix.
Transplanting: When the seedlings are about 6-8 inches tall and the danger of frost has passed, transplant them outdoors. Space the plants 6-8 inches apart in rows that are 12-18 inches apart.
Trenching: As the leeks grow, gradually mound soil around the stems to blanch them. This process, known as trenching, helps develop the long, white stalks that leeks are known for.
Care and Maintenance
Watering: Leeks require consistent moisture to thrive. Water the plants regularly, especially during dry periods, to keep the soil evenly moist.
Fertilizing: Apply a balanced fertilizer at planting time and side-dress with compost or a nitrogen-rich fertilizer every few weeks during the growing season.
Weeding: Keep the growing area free of weeds to reduce competition for nutrients and water.
Harvesting and Storage
Leeks are typically ready for harvest 120-150 days after planting. To harvest, gently lift the plants from the soil using a garden fork or spade. Be careful not to damage the stalks. Leeks can be harvested throughout the fall and early winter, depending on the climate.
Once harvested, remove the outer leaves and trim the roots and dark green tops. Leeks can be stored in the refrigerator for up to two weeks. For longer storage, blanch and freeze them.
Culinary Uses
The 'Large American Flag' leek is prized for its mild, sweet flavor and tender texture. It can be used in a variety of dishes, including soups, stews, casseroles, and quiches. Leeks are also delicious when sautéed, grilled, or roasted. They pair well with a wide range of ingredients, such as potatoes, carrots, celery, garlic, and herbs like thyme and parsley.
Growing your own 'Large American Flag' leeks can be a rewarding and enjoyable experience, offering a fresh and flavorful addition to your culinary repertoire
Before Planting: Leeks are heavy feeders and require fertile soil (pH of 6.2-6.8) for best results.
Planting: Sow 3 months before last frost date, 2-3 seeds per cell, 1/4″ deep. Beginning in late spring, when approx. 8″ tall and pencil-thick, transplant outdoors 6″ apart, rows 24″ apart in holes dibbled about 6″ deep. Only 1-2″ of leaves need extend above the soil surface. Do not firm soil, allow irrigation or rain to fill in the dibble hole.
Watering: Since leeks have shallow roots, they require lots of water and a weedd-free environment. Add mulch to retain moisture and deter weedds.
Fertilizer: A season prior to planting, add compost where the leeks will grow. After planting, feed the leeks every week with liquid fertilizer.
Days to Maturity: Leeks are ready to harvest in the late summer or early fall, and the whole plant should be harvested. (See each variety for days to maturity)
